Jennifer Fielder

Jenny previously completed a Research Master’s in Brain and Cognitive Sciences at the University of Amsterdam and a BSc in Psychology at the University of Bath, including a placement year as a Research Assistant at the Harvard Laboratory for Developmental Studies. Her master’s thesis project focused on the ageing brain, investigating how interaction information in resting state fMRI and MEG data relates to cognitive reserve using a network-based approach. During her master’s, Jenny also wrote a literature thesis investigating how walking through urban environments influences affect and the implications for urban mental health, drawing on literature from urbanism, architecture, psychology, neuroscience and ethnography. This cemented her passion for interdisciplinary research.

Jenny was drawn to this PhD programme due to its interdisciplinary nature as well as the importance placed on co-production and linking research to policy and practice. Her research interests include how physical and social environments impact mental health, and how these effects may change across development. She is looking forward to using the rotations to explore topics further and learn new techniques, including methods from epidemiology, computational modelling, and experience sampling methods such as smartphone data collection. Her first-year rotations will be with Jen Dykxhoorn and Kate Walters (population), Nikolaus Steinbeis (mechanism) and Liam Mason (intervention). Outside of academia, Jenny enjoys walking and cycling, growing tomatoes in the summer, and playing netball and ultimate frisbee.
